(Tried and Proven) There is one other rifle you might consider.Fulton Armory is now doing a "Tanker" version of the Garand and it is available in. Speaking of looks and this is purely from the point of view of aesthetics.the Scout model M1A is probably the best looking rifle I have ever seen that wasn't an M1 Garand and it uses the standard gas system as scipio337 pointed out. The Jae-100 stock has gotten some good reviews and looks pretty bad ass too. I would agree with Nullzero regarding the Socom II the rail system they put on it really was an after thought and the balance is off. Finances caused me to let them both go but I certainly recommend either.
the 16 was definitely much handier but still fairly heavy. I have owned both a full size M1A and the Socom 16.
